Learn about Haeger pottery at opening day of Dundee Historical Museum

The Dundee Township Historical Society Museum, 426 Highland Ave. in West Dundee, will open for 2017 season at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12.

A new exhibit featuring Haeger Industries pottery and memorabilia will honor the family-owned business in East Dundee which closed in 2016 after 145 years.

Owners Alexandra Haeger Estes, president, and her husband, CEO Craig Zachrich, will be present to talk about the history of the pottery and share some memories of the family and their longtime presence in the community.

Haeger Potteries begin in 1871 when German immigrant David Haeger opened the business on South Van Buren Street in East Dundee. The company first specialized in making brick and tile. Millions of their bricks went into rebuilding the city after the Great Chicago Fire. In the early 1900s, the company began making pottery and started experimenting with ceramics and glazes.

Beginning March 12, museum hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays and Wednesdays; open by appointment on other days, closed holidays.
