STEM Camp for middle-school students March 20-24 at Oakton

For middle-school students grades 6-8 who enjoy creative inventions, robots, computers, video games and other fun, science-related activities, Oakton Community College is hosting a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Camp from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 20-24 at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.

During the week, participants will learn to program the Raspberry Pi computer to perform lots of amazing feats. The credit-card-sized device plugs into a television and a keyboard and can be used for electronic projects such as controlling robots and playing games.

In addition to interfacing with Oakton Athletics, students also will have the opportunity to get to know members of the Oakton Robotics team. The squad is busy gearing up for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Robotic Mining Competition in May after finishing second in the nation last year. At the conclusion of the week, participants will take their Raspberry Pi computers home to continue creating and controlling their own inventions.
