Glenbard South's Bair is Queen of the Hill

NORMAL - Glenbard South sophomore Maggie Bair had the best of both worlds this weekend - she got to see her brother win a boys basketball regional championship Friday night, then she went out and won a championship of her own on Saturday.

Bair won the Class 3A Queen of the Hill 3-point shootout competition Friday afternoon at Redbird Arena then drove to Aurora to watch the Raiders' boys basketball team and her brother Charlie upset top seed Burlington Central in overtime Friday night in the title game of the Marmion regional. Charlie Bair scored 10 points in that win.

Saturday morning Maggie and family, Charlie included, headed back to Normal, where Maggie shot in the Queen of the Hill finals Saturday afternoon.

The trips were worth it as Maggie sank 10 of her 15 shots to win the championship.

"It's a good feeling," said the 6-foot-2 Bair, who averaged 12.6 points, a DuPage County-leading 11.2 rebounds and made 27 3-pointers for the Raiders this season.

"I'm very excited and very happy. It's been a great experience and I've met some great people."

Hampshire senior Rachel Dumoulin, the Class 4A champion, was third with 6 of 15. Class 1A champ Kassidy Walters of Greenfield had 7 and Class 2A champ Madisyn Fischer of Peoria Christian made 5.

Bair, the second shooter of the four participants, didn't shoot at all between Friday's competition and Saturday's finals.

"I didn't really practice much from (Friday)," she said. "I just had to concentrate on the little things, like not stepping on the line and just staying confident."

Dumoulin, supported by her family as well as Whip-Purs' coach Mike Featherly, appreciated the opportunity to compete in the event.

"Coming here was a really cool experience. I got to meet some cool people and it was fun," said Dumoulin, who averaged 14.6 points and 4.6 rebounds a game while making only 16 3-pointers. A three-year starter who will play at Elgin Community College next year, Dumoulin finished at Hampshire with 879 points in 85 games, a 10.3 average.
