Palatine Road in Arlington Heights reopens after water main break

A section of Palatine Road in Arlington Heights was shut down during the morning rush Friday after a water main break sent water gushing across the road.

The broken water main occurred on the west side of nearby Highland Avenue between Palatine Frontage Road and Lillian Avenue about 7:45 a.m., officials said.

Water gushed out from the cast iron water main and made it as far as Palatine Road, prompting a temporary shutdown of the eastbound lanes of the major thoroughfare.

"As soon as we heard about it, we were out there very quickly to mitigate the circumstances," said Jeff Musinski, Arlington Heights' superintendent of utilities.

The break was likely caused by a weak spot in the pipe - what crews normally refer to as a "blow out," Musinski said.

The road was reopened by 9:20 a.m.
