Longfellow students showcase legacy at Raupp Museum

Third grade students from Longfellow Elementary School opened an exhibit last week at the Raupp Museum. The exhibit showcases the students' perception of the legacy of 2016.

The project began with students exploring history, contemplating their legacy, and identifying trends from the previous year that will be remembered well into the future. The third graders focused on topics with which they personally identify in order to make the experience more meaningful.

"Our students were passionately engaged in this project and thrilled to present their exhibit to the community," said Heather Popilek, third grade teacher at Longfellow Elementary School. "Not only did our students explore topics and themes that resonate throughout history, but they also made broader connections to growth, change, and the legacy of a community over time."

Students were also sure to identify qualities of a compelling museum exhibit, like incorporating an interactive component, in order to best engage the audience. One group studied the advancements in medicine over time and presented responses from a survey they conducted with doctors, a pharmacist and a nurse. Other themes explored and artifacts displayed included clothing pieces to represent current fashion trends and past to present day sports equipment.

The exhibit will be showcased at the Raupp Museum through March 31.
