Suspect charged in Waukegan grocery store stabbing

A 24-year-old Waukegan man is behind bars in the Lake County jail facing multiple felony charges alleging he stabbed a teenager at a city grocery store Wednesday night in what police described as a random act of violence.

Andrew Lozano, of the 800 block of Pine Street, is charged with aggravated battery and unlawful use of a weapon stemming from the attack, which police said occurred about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, in the Superfresh Market in the 1700 block of North Lewis Avenue.

According to police, Lozano entered a Metro PCS store inside the Superfresh and had an altercation with a female employee. When two male friends of the employee intervened, Lozano stabbed one and injured the other, police said.

Both victims suffered minor injuries and are expected to recover, police said. There is no known relationship between Lozano and the victims, authorities said.

Lozano was arrested about two blocks away with a knife police believe was used in the attack.

The Waukegan man faces a separate aggravated battery charge filed in connection with an attack that occurred Feb. 10 at a motel in the 0-100 block of Green Bay Road, police said. The charge alleges Lozano entered the motel and began hitting and kicking a clerk. The clerk was hospitalized with internal injuries, but is expected to recover, police said.

Lozano is scheduled to appear in court on the charges March 27.
