CLC music department to present eight spring concerts

More than 250 musicians from the College of Lake County Music department will present eight instrumental and choral concerts this spring.

One of the highlights is the 40th Annual Guest Artist Concert featuring Terell Stafford, a Grammy Award-winning jazz trumpet player, on May 5.

• Wind Ensemble Concerts: 4 p.m. Sundays, March 5 and May 7. The 50-member Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Michael Flack, will present a variety of music from the wind ensemble repertoire. The March 5 concert will feature "To Tame the Perilous Skies" by David R. Holsinger, "Gum Suckers March" and "Selections from Les Miserables."

• Jazz Night Concert featuring Libertyville High School Jazz Ensembles: 4 p.m. Sunday, March 12. The Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles will present up-tempo big band jazz charts, including "Little Ole Softy," "Send in the Clowns" and "Prelude to a Kiss." In addition, two Libertyville High School jazz bands will perform: Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Tim Barclay, and Jazz Ensemble II, directed by Matt Karnstedt. Michael Flack directs the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, and Dave Hibbard directs the Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble.

• Gospel Choir Concert: 4 p.m. Saturday, March 18. Enjoy an afternoon of gospel music with soloists and instrumentalists. The choir is directed by Charles Thomas Hayes.

• 40th Annual Guest Artist Concert featuring Terell Stafford: 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 5. Called "one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player" by piano legend McCoy Tyner, Stafford has performed with the Jimmy Heath Quintet and Big Band, Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Alumni Band. He won a Grammy Award for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra's "Live at the Village Vanguard." Stafford, director of jazz studies at Temple University and artistic director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, will solo with the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble. The Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble will also perform.

• Spring Choral Concert: 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6. CLC's four ensembles will perform a mix of musical styles to celebrate spring, featuring both classic and contemporary composers. Concert highlights include "The Three Flower Songs" by Eric Whitacre, "Gabriellas sang" by Stefan Nilsson, selections from "My Fair Lady" by Lerner and Loewe and "Coronation Anthem Number 2" (The King Shall Rejoice) by Handel. The ensembles and their directors are: Choir of Lake County and CLC Singers directed by Jeffrey DeLay; Chamber Singers directed by Ingrid Mikolajczyk and Constance Vander Weele; and Gospel Choir directed by Charles Thomas Hayes.

• Jazz Combos: 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 8. The combos, directed by John Mose and Michael Flack, will present a free concert in Room P101.

• Concert Band: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10. John Mose and the 60-member Concert Band will perform a range of band music, from classic marches and symphonic pieces to Broadway medleys and film scores.

Concert prices range from $5-$8. Instrumental music concerts are free to students younger than 18. For tickets and information, call (847) 543-2300 or visit www.clcillinois.edu/tickets.

The Box Office is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 60 minutes before each performance. CLC recommends that concertgoers purchase their tickets in advance or arrive at least 30 minutes before the performance.

Due to the quiet nature of many songs, choral concerts are not appropriate for children younger than 3.

Community members are invited to participate in CLC Music department ensembles or take private lessons for college credit or personal enrichment. Local musicians are invited to join the ensembles during Fall Semester, which will begin Aug. 21.

For information, contact the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts division at (847) 543-2040 or visit www.clcillinois.edu/programs/mus. Some ensembles require an audition.
