Downers Grove South brothers put on show

The Brock and Beau show is coming to a gym near you this spring.

That dynamic duo - brothers Brock and Beau Herion - put on quite a show during their debut as Downers Grove South teammates on Wednesday night, leading the Mustangs to an impressive season-opening win over Downers Grove North and Naperville North.

The Mustangs finished with 145.5 points while the Huskies edged the Trojans, 131.5 to 131.1, in Naperville.

How impressive was Downers Grove South? Their season-high last spring was a 140.8 at the Wheaton Warrenville South sectional.

"We've got some good guys out here," Beau Herion said. "It should be a pretty successful season."

Beau, a freshman, bested Brock, a senior, 51.4 to 50.5 to win the all-around. Brock won pommel horse, vault and parallel bars while Beau won floor, still rings and high bar. Apparently, the brothers are fine with sharing things.

"We've never gotten a chance to compete together technically because he's older than me," Beau Herion said. "Now we can finally do it. I think it's going to be a lot of fun."

As for his debut meet?

"I wasn't at my best, but it was pretty successful overall," he said. "I died on vault a little bit, which is kind of scary and it affected me a bit on my final event (parallel bars)."

That's where his brother was nearly flawless earning the highest score in any event with a 9.5.

Jacob Klamer added four scores and Donte Reed contributed a pair in the winning effort.

Brian Kay led the Huskies with a 43.8 in the all-around. He's expected to be the team's only one, as specialists will look to add to the team's score.

"It was a good meet," Kay said. "We had a lot of energy, we got the butterflies out and we've got a whole season to score even higher."

The Huskies topped out at 134.2 in 2016 so they're almost certain to surpass that later this year.

Michael Hunter had an 8.2 on floor, Tyler Child scored a 6.9 on pommel horse, Cameron Luedeke had an 8.0 on still rings and 7.7 on parallel bars, Riyaaz Khan had a 7.8 on still rings, Tim Gutknecht had a 7.6 on vault and Celeb Lenning scored a 6.0 on high bars for the hosts.

"I was very pleased with the boys and their performance. A 131 to start is nothing to be ashamed of," Huskies coach Chris Stanicek said. "I really was pleased with the outcome this early in the season, and the good thing is we know what we have to work on, the skills we need to add and the details we need to clean up."

Senior Mike Kudelka led Downers Grove North with a 45.3 in the all-around.

"I quit my club in December and came here so it's taken awhile to get back into it," he said. "I've been working pretty hard and we did really good today. I think once we get our sets down and have more practice we'll be pretty good."

Freshman Aaron Heppner had a 41.2.

"I kind of messed up a bit, but it was my first high school meet," he said. "It's a lot faster than club, but it's a lot of fun."
