Villa Park man charged in Elmhurst burglary

An 18-year-old Villa Park man has been charged with burglary to a motor vehicle in Elmhurst, police said Wednesday.

Authorities said Demetrius C. Orr, of the 100 block of N. Cornell Avenue, was apprehended early Tuesday morning and taken to the DuPage County jail where he was being held on $5,000 bond.

Police said they responded to a 911 call at 1:49 a.m. from a resident who saw a suspicious male pulling on car door handles near Berkley and Elm Park avenues.

The first officer on the scene found a vehicle on the 100 block of S. Berkley that apparently had been entered. After talking to the vehicle's owner, the officer confirmed a burglary had taken place.

Officers searched the area with the help of a canine unit and spotted the suspect, who fled on foot. Officers found the man about an hour later walking along the Canadian National Railroad tracks near West Avenue and took him into custody.

Detectives said they have recovered several items that have not yet been connected to any known vehicle burglaries. Residents are encouraged to contact police to document any unreported burglaries or thefts.

Police also are encouraging residents to remove valuables from their parked cars and to keep unattended vehicles locked.
