Endorsement: Ruzanski for Lake in the Hills village president

Lake in the Hills Village President Paul Mulcahy is being challenged by current village trustee Russ Ruzanski.

Both candidates are longtime residents of the village and have the necessary skills to oversee its business.

Incumbent Mulcahy, though, is facing legal troubles from a Nov. 6, 2016, arrest for domestic battery that naturally give us concerns.

"Things on a Saturday night went horribly, horribly wrong and I'm deeply ashamed of what happened" Mulchay says. "It was an aberration in my life. That is not the person that I am."

Ruzanski says the arrest was one of the reasons he chose to run, but he adds he has specific concerns with Mulcahy's leadership and the direction of village government. He sees a lack of diversity on the village board and complains that given the chance to appoint a woman to the board, Mulcahy chose to appoint another male.

"There was an excellent opportunity to at least consider a female on the board," Ruzanski says. Mulcahy's response is not encouraging.

"It is not the responsibility of the village president to diversify the board of trustees," he says simply, and as for the lack of diversity on the board, he laments, "I have to personally find a woman here that is interested in the position who has the time, the desire, you know is at the stage in her life where her kids are not too much of a burden or her job or anything else. I don't personally know a lot of those women."

Given Mulcahy's pending legal issues from his arrest and his seeming lack of interest in attracting a broader range of ideas and influences on the village board, we think it's time for a change at the top. We endorse Lake in the Hills village trustee Russ Ruzanski for village president.
