CLC forensics and debate team member earns gold at February tournament

Ryan Haass, a College of Lake County sophomore from Vernon Hills, won a gold medal in public debate, a gold medal in impromptu speaking and a silver medal in extemporaneous speaking at a regional speech and debate tournament held Feb. 17 and 18 at Harper College in Palatine.

Haass, who went undefeated in the four preliminary rounds of the individual parliamentary debate preceding the final round, was one of seven members of CLC's forensics and debate team, which competed among 19 other colleges at the tournament. Twelve of the schools were community colleges, including ones from New York, Alabama and Virginia. The four-year schools included Northern Illinois University and Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, N.C.

"It felt good to win the gold medals, especially in the debate competition, because all of my opponents were students at four-year colleges," said Haass, a philosophy major.

Other CLC team members who competed in the tournament were Matt Johnson, Brianne Green, Cody Carrigan, Joshua Rangai, Theresa Snarski and Peter Ralston. Green won a bronze medal in impromptu speaking, and Johnson took home a bronze in program oral interpretation.

The CLC team travels to the Illinois Intercollegiate Forensics Association tournament March 3-5 at Northern Illinois University. On April 9-15, the team will head to suburban Washington, D.C. to compete in a national tournament sponsored by Phi Rho Pi, the forensic association for two-year colleges.
