Family escapes Elgin house fire

An Elgin family escaped injury Saturday night after a fire broke out in the upper levels of their home, damaging the attic, roof and second-floor living areas, authorities said.

Elgin firefighters were called to home in the 400 block of Sunset Drive at 8:55 p.m. by a resident who saw flames in an upstairs room, fire officials said. The first firefighters to arrive went inside, found fire in the attic and quickly brought it under control, officials said.

The family evacuated the home prior to the fire department's arrival, authorities said. There were no injuries reported.

The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to the home and its contents, according to the Elgin Fire Department.
