Driver crashes, injured while fleeing police

A man who authorities say crashed the vehicle he was driving Saturday night while attempting to flee from a traffic stop in West Chicago was hospitalized Sunday.

According to West Chicago police, an officer initiated the stop at about 7:51 p.m. Saturday for multiple traffic violations near southbound Route 59 and Arbor Avenue. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop, and instead turned onto eastbound Hawthorne Lane and then left onto northbound Wild Ginger Lane, police said.

After turning onto Wild Ginger Lane, the driver increased the vehicle's speed in an attempt to elude the officer, but lost control and crashed in the 1000 block of Trillium Trail, police said.

The man had to be extricated from the vehicle, and was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, police said.

The West Chicago Police Department is being assisted by the DuPage County Accident Reconstruction Team and the DuPage County Sheriff's Police. Police said the investigation remains open and further information will be released at a later time.
