The Academy Awards usually include a few surprises, but no one could have seen that ending coming.
"La La Land" was mistakenly announced as the best picture winner on Sunday night. "Moonlight" was ultimately named the winner but only after the "La La Land" team already finished their speeches.
While "Moonlight" beating out "La La Land" is the kind of Oscar surprise that comes as no surprise, it was a bit of an awkward moment as "La La Land" left the stage and host Jimmy Kimmel assured the audience that "Moonlight" was actually the winner, and no, it wasn't a joke, while Warren Beatty tried to explain the mistake.
