Chicago area Culver's raise more than $20,000 for JDRF

More than 30 Chicago area Culver's helped raise more than $20,000 for research into Type 1 diabetes (T1D) through a "Donate and Dine" fundraiser benefiting JDRF Illinois on Feb. 16.

Assisted by local families affected by T1D, who helped serve guests from 4 to 8 p.m., Culver's found a promising new partner in JDRF, and discovered that many of its own team members, managers and area owners have been living with T1D for many years.

For Bryon Waller, co-owner of Culver's in Lockport and Joliet, the JDRF fundraiser was a powerful reminder of how the chain known for its ButterBurgers and frozen custard can make an impact in its local community.

A former tight end for the University of Illinois, Waller was diagnosed with T1D during his sophomore year in 2005. Ironically, Waller spent several days in the Silver Cross Hospital intensive care unit, suffering from complications due to his diabetes, just prior to the JDRF fundraiser.

Celebrities including the late Mary Tyler Moore and Chicago Cubs legend Ron Santo both lived with T1D and helped raise millions of dollars for research into the disease that affects 1.25 million Americans, including 200,000 people under the ages of 20.

"We're grateful to Culver's for all of the restaurants' support," said Mimi Crabtree, JDRF Illinois Executive Director. "Living with Type 1 diabetes is difficult and even life threatening. Those affected serve as an inspiration by facing the disease's challenges with courage and perseverance, and they don't let it stand in the way of achieving their goals."
