Carpentersville man found guilty after threatening woman with gun

A Carpentersville man accused of holding a gun to a woman's head in front of her children while asking them to "come watch your mother die" was convicted by a Kane County jury this week of gun charges, Kane County officials said.

Chad W. Conway, 37, most recently of Roscoe, was convicted Wednesday of being an armed habitual criminal and of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, both felonies the Kane County State's Attorney's office said in a statement.

Prosecutors told the jury that at 3:30 a.m. March 21, 2015, Conway went to a home in the 1700 block of Papoose Road in Carpentersville and placed a handgun and a wad of cash on the table.

The victim, the children's mother, confronted Conway about the gun and took $20 from the pile of money. Conway grabbed the gun, a Ruger Blackhawk .357 magnum revolver, and fired a shot at a kitchen wall while demanding she return the money.

The woman then took another $20 from the pile of money for the damage to her wall, and Conway fired another shot. Both bullets went through a kitchen wall and out toward the street.

Conway then grabbed the woman by the throat, stuck the gun to her head and drug her to the living room, before calling the sleeping children to "come watch your mother die."

The confrontation ended shortly. Conway then left, and the victim called police.

Conway's previous convictions include cocaine delivery, aggravated battery, domestic battery, unlawful possession of a weapon, battery and aggravated assault.

He faces between six and 60 years in prison, an extended term because of his criminal history.

He's expected in court again at 2 p.m. April 26 for sentencing. He remains in the Kane County jail.
