Libertyville school celebrates Black History Month

Kruccus International brought its traditional and authentic African culture program to Libertyville on Wednesday to help Butterfield School celebrate Black History Month.

Butterfield students were immersed in dance, music, song and spoken word during the program, which featured performers Mark Vaughn, Regina Perry-Carr and Baba P.C. playing traditional instruments such as the djembe, dundun and shekere.

Teacher Kim Jenkins, Principal Candice Kehoe and Assistant Principal Kristi Patterson created the Appreciating Culture at Butterfield School program, which provides performances to help build student acceptance of various backgrounds.

"In a community where we don't experience as much diversity, this really helps raise an awareness for the students," Patterson said. "I think it helps the students understand the differences that are out there that they might not experience every day."

Wednesday's performance was sponsored by The Butterfield Family Association.
