Kitchen fire damages Buffalo Grove home, kills pet dog

A kitchen fire in a two-story home on the 500 block of Crown Circle in Buffalo Grove killed the family dog and made the residence uninhabitable, fire officials said Wednesday.

The fire department responded to a report of smoke coming from the roof of a home at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. The first engine arrived three minutes later and the alarm was elevated to a Code 4, which prompted assistance from departments including Long Grove, Arlington Heights and Lake Zurich, according to a news release.

Heavy smoke and high heat was encountered on the first floor and the oven was on fire. The fire had traveled up through the kitchen cabinets, but did not extend to the second floor and was contained in the kitchen. The fire was declared under control at 2:47 p.m.

The home was unoccupied except for the family dog, who died of smoke inhalation. Smoke damage to the house also was extensive. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and damage estimates are not yet available, the release said.
