Premiere of 'Trevor' to kick off upcoming season at Writers Theatre

Writers Theatre opens its 2017-18 season with the world premiere of "Trevor," a musical based on the Academy Award-winning short film about a 13-year-old boy coming to terms with his sexuality. The film subsequently sparked The Trevor Project, an organization that provides support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young people who are considering suicide.

Marc Bruni ("Beautiful: The Carole King Story") directs the show, by writer/lyricist Dan Collins and composer Julianne Wick Davis. It begins previews Aug. 9, inaugurating a season comprised mostly of classic works, including Oscar Wilde's comedy "The Importance of Being Earnest." That play begins previews Nov. 8 under artistic director Michael Halberstam.

Director William Brown's revival of Eugene O'Neill's romantic tragedy "A Moon for the Misbegotten" begins previews Feb. 7, 2018. Next up is the Chicago area premiere of Lydia Diamond's "Smart People" about four bright, young urban professionals dealing with the politics of race and sex. It runs March 21 to June 10, 2018.

The season concludes with a revival of Sam Shepard's "Buried Child" about family dysfunction in middle America. Resident director Kimberly Senior directs the production, which begins previews May 9, 2018,

Another play, scheduled from Sept. 27 through Dec. 17, has not yet been announced.

Performances take place at 325 Tudor Court, Glencoe. Six-play season subscriptions range from $249 to $389. Three-play flex packages start at $199. They are available at the box office, by phone (847) 242-6000 or online at writerstheatre.org.
