Legendary folk musician Peter Yarrow to play ECC Arts Center March 5

Peter Yarrow, of the legendary folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary, brings his songs and stories to Elgin this March. The performance will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 5, in the Elgin Community College Arts Center, Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

In this intimate show, Yarrow shares iconic songs such as "Puff the Magic Dragon," "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane" with personal stories of being a musician in the 1960s, living in Greenwich Village, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and, of course, his career as part of Peter, Paul and Mary. Yarrow's gift for songwriting has produced many songs for Peter, Paul & Mary, including "Puff, the Magic Dragon," "Day is Done," "Light One Candle" and "The Great Mandala." As a member of the renowned musical trio, Yarrow has earned multiple gold and platinum albums, as well as numerous Grammy Awards and nominations.

Peter Yarrow's talents as a creative artist - both with the legendary trio Peter, Paul & Mary and as a solo performer - are frequently directed at using music to convey a message of humanity and caring. Over the years, many issues have moved Yarrow to commit his time and talent including equal rights, peace, the environment, gender equality, homelessness, hospice care, and education. Along with his singing partners, Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, Yarrow participated in the civil rights movement, which brought them to Washington in 1963 to sing for the historic march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the equally historic Selma-Montgomery march in 1965.

In 1999, Yarrow founded Operation Respect, a nonprofit education and advocacy organization dedicated to transforming schools, summer camps, and other youth-serving organizations into respectful, safe, and compassionate climates of learning, free of bullying, ridicule and violence. Peter Yarrow's life and work is based on his passionate belief that music, with its power to build community and catalyze change, can be a particularly powerful organizing tool.
