1920s speak-easy raises funds for historical society

To gain entry to Aurora Historical Society's 1920s speak-easy fundraiser, you have to speak the password, "Joe sent me." Then you'll be in for an evening of hot and cool jazz, refreshments and a cash bar.

Visitors will take their stand against the 18th Amendment in the same way millions of Americans did during Prohibition - only this time no laws will be broken.

Titled Joe Sent Me, the event starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 10, in the lower level lounge at One East Benton, formerly the 1904 Aurora Public Library but now the home of Support Techs, a business support firm.

The cost is $45 per person, or $40 for historical society members. Reservations are required and can be made online at aurorahistory.net, by calling (630) 906-0650, or by sending a check payable to the AHS to P.O. Box 905, Aurora, IL 60507.

Unidentified guests enjoy life while flaunting their opposition to the 18th Amendment prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages. A fundraiser for the Aurora Historical Society will have the same attitude - without the breaking the law. Courtesy of Aurora Historical Society
