Paramedics rescue woman who fell through ice in Bartlett

A 20-year-old woman was treated for possible hypothermia after falling through the thin layer of ice on a thawing pond in Bartlett Thursday morning.

The woman became submerged up to her waist and was unable to get out of the water on her own.

She was able to call for help on a cellphone after having been in the water for approximately 30 minutes, Bartlett Fire Protection District officials said.

Despite the fact the pond near the 1100 block of Saulsalito Court was about half a mile off the road and through a thick forest, paramedics were on the scene within four minutes of receiving the call. They were taking her to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village nine minutes later, officials said.

Bartlett Fire Protection District officials warned members of the public to stay away from ice as this winter's warm weather prevented the formation of any ice thick enough to support a person.
