Gerber goes for 26 in Schaumburg victory

Schaumburg senior Mallory Gerber, who surpassed 1,000 career points at the Wheaton North tournament in December, has hardly slowed down in January and February.

The 5-foot-11 guard/forward opened the postseason on Tuesday night with a game-high 26 points and 7 rebounds to help lead the No. 7-seeded Saxons past No. 10 Bartlett 64-49 in the semifinals of the Class 4A Batavia regional.

Laura O'Connell (8 rebounds), Maya Bowens (6 rebounds) and Kayla Patterson each chipped in 7 points for Schaumburg (16-12), which will face No. 2 Wheaton North on Friday at 7 p.m. for the championship.

Maine West 72, Maine East 32: Sophomore Rachel Kent (22 points, 6 rebounds), junior Allison Pearson (11 points) and freshman Angela Dugalic (10 points, 10 rebounds) helped No. 3 seed Maine West (24-3) past No. 15 Maine East and into the championship game of its own Class 4A regional against No. 5 New Trier at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Junior Gabriela Alvarado scored all 6 of her points in the fourth quarter while classmates Catherine Johnson and Alisa Fallon each chipped in 5.

St. Charles North 47, Conant 31: Senior Jorie Wachal closed out her high-scoring career with a team-high 13 points for the No. 11 seeded Cougars (10-16) against the No. 6 North Stars in the semifinals of the Conant Class 4A regional.

Michelle Benson, Cate Fitzgerald and Taylor Cyr each had a 3-pointer for the Cougars.

"It was a tough loss to a very physical St. Charles North team," said Conant coach Deirdre Naughton. "They had a lot of weapons tonight.

"I'm so proud of my senior group (Wachal, Brittany Laskero, Michelle Benson, Christy Dizonno, Cam Rosas, Aisling Benson and Megan Kasabian) and it's been a pleasure to coach them and see them grow. On and off the court they are a wonderful group of people. Our whole program will miss them."

Geneva 64, Hoffman Estates 17: Senior Monraia Wilson led the Hawks (4-24) with 8 points against top-seeded Geneva in the Hawks' own Class 4A regional.

Maine South 61, Prospect 42: Sophomore Mandy Withey and junior Emily Frasco shared scoring honors for No. 10 Prospect with 10 points apiece against No. 7 Maine South in the semifinal of the Class 4A Glenbrook North regional.

The Knights (12-14) also received 6 points from Eileen Donohue.

"A red hot Maine South team beat us tonight," said Prospect coach Gabrielle Lovin. "They were hitting from all over and pushed the tempo. I am thankful for a great year and wish the seniors (Haley Will, Mary McKenna, Kendra Gancarz, Maggie Determann and Donohue) nothing but the best."

St. Viator 50, Lake View 13: No. 4 St. Viator led 28-10 at half and never looked back against No. 13 Lake View in the semifinal of the Class 3A Vernon Hills regional.

Olivia Solimene (11 points, 2 assists), Haley Robinson (7 points, 3 rebounds), Rebecca Wolf (7 points, 3 rebounds), Michaela Mueller (5 points, 3 rebounds) and Jenna Breslin (5 points, 5 rebounds) were top scorers for the Lions (15-13).

St. Viator will face No. 5 Vernon Hills for the championship at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Loyola 60, Leyden 29: No. 4-seeded Loyola advanced to the championship of the Class 4A Trinity regional with the win over No. 14 Leyden.
