Judson to host Race Matters Week with special guests starting Feb. 20

Judson University in Elgin will highlight the issue of race relations in the nation, in the church, and in our community during three special events during regular chapel hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Feb. 20, 22 and 24.

The Race Matters Week chapels will be held at 10 a.m. in Herrick Chapel, 1151 N. State St., Elgin.

It will be a time for the Judson community to engage with one another and with members of the church and academia about matters pertaining to race, ethnicity and diversity in general. The event is free and open to the public. Visit www.judsonu.edu.

On Monday, Feb. 20, spoken-word artist JGivens (Jeremiah Timothy Givens), formerly of the Humble Beast Records label, will be the guest. JGivens is best-known for his Christian hip-hop inspired album, "Fly Exam." This 2015 album marked his third studio release. This chapel will welcome Judson's prospective student guests, as it will be part of an Overnight Preview Day event.

On Wednesday, Feb. 22, the Rev. Dr. Soong-Chan Rah will speak. He is the Milton B. Engebretson Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park University in Chicago, and the author of "Many Colors: Cultural Intelligence for a Changing Church (Moody Publishers)," "The Next Evangelicalism: Releasing the Church from Western Cultural Captivity (InterVarsity Press)" and "Mercy and Justice (InterVarsity Press)." He is also a blogger and sought-after speaker.

On Friday, Feb. 24, Chris Beard, lead pastor of Peoples Church Cincinnati (Ohio), will make a presentation. Beard leads a church whose congregants represent more than 35 nations. The church is 25 percent African American, 25 percent international and 50 percent white. But it hasn't always been that way. Following race riots in his city in 2001, he drafted a new mission for his church and put a more decided focus on racial conciliation.
