Worry about state's troubles first
To Jim Prescott, re: Jan. 30 letter: You live in Illinois, the deadbeat state that can't pay its bills, that has been run into the ground by a system that is so corrupt after 30 years of one-party rule that it can't find its way out. How about starting in your own backyard and doing something to clean up the mess that you, like me, helped create?
You are right that ideas make people vote. They did, and thank God for a system that allows the little guy in Podunk USA to have some say along with those in the big cities and populous states, who could turn this country into a dictatorship of the majority very easily.
I for one believe our forefathers seeing this as a possibility were very wise to give everyone a chance.
What if you were on the other end of the stick, and no one would listen to you? Would you still prefer your election for president to be by popular vote only? Would it be the most important thing on your menu?
