State Rep. Marty Moylan honored by fire districts

Illinois State Rep. Marty Moylan was recently honored by the Northern Illinois Alliance of Fire Protection Districts with its Legislator of the Year Award, in recognition of his work to ensure that fire departments have the necessary resources to protect and serve their local communities. The Northern Illinois Alliance of Fire Protection Districts is an organization compiled of firefighters representing 79 different local fire protection districts. Moylan serves the 55th District, which includes portions of Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Elk Grove Village, Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows and Chicago.

• Arlington Heights-based Northwest Community Healthcare's CEO Steve Scogna, of Naperville, was elected to the Illinois Health and Hospital Association's (IHA) 2017 board of trustees, the policymaking body for the association, which represents more than 200 hospitals and nearly 50 health systems across Illinois. Scogna, whose three-year term began Jan. 1, is one of 21 trustees elected by the voting members of the association. IHA advocates for a sustainable, patient-focused health care system that provides high-quality care and promotes healthy communities.

• Palatine native John McHugh, a vocal performance major at Wesleyan University, Bloomington-Normal, was selected as a soloist for the university's annual Henry Charles Memorial Concerto-Aria Concert being presented Feb. 24. McHugh auditioned in front of Illinois Wesleyan faculty members and before a panel of judges from outside of the School of Music. He will perform "Madamina, il catalogo e questo" from Don Giovanni by Mozart. McHugh is also an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Men's Music Fraternity and a member of the student-run sketch comedy group Quickes!

• For his dedicated service to the Glenview Park District and the Glenview Park Foundation, the Glenview Park District board presented Sam Witwer Jr., with the 2016 Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Park and Recreation Association Community Service Award. During his 35 years of service with the park district, Witwer worked with numerous board members and four executive directors providing legal advice on multiple capital projects, land acquisitions, intergovernmental agreements and other issues. He was a key contributor in the acquisition of the Historic Wagner Farm. The park district board also approved a resolution honoring Witwer for outstanding dedication and service from 1982 to 2017.

• Trevor Buck, Viktoriia Elifirenko and Tilda Wagner, all of Buffalo Grove, were among the Oakton Community College students recognized for academic achievement in the fall 2016 semester with President's Scholar honors. To be recognized as an Oakton President's Scholar, a student must be enrolled in at least six credit hours of course levels at 100 or above during a given term; earn a perfect 4.0 grade-point average that term; be in good academic standing and meet standards of academic progress at the end of the term for which honors are being considered.
