Sedgebrook Residents Exercise Their Way Across America
Their goal is to make it to various destinations across the U.S. and their mode of transportation is only loosely defined. For the second consecutive year, Sedgebrook is launching its Exercise Across America program. In conjunction with Heart Health Month, the initiative is designed to encourage cardio workouts, which lead to a healthy heart.
"The residents choose the city that they want to 'go to.' Every mile that they complete via walking, running, swimming, working out on the elliptical, etc. earns them 100 miles to their destination," said Ruth Reyna, fitness manager at Sedgebrook. "Last year, someone exercised 109 miles for the month, which translated to 1,090 miles, so they made it to San Francisco and back. The total for 70 participating residents was 1,447 miles. This year, I'd like if we had more participants and we made it to 1,600 or more miles."
Residents have chosen a variety of destinations but this year, a favorite target is Seattle, where former fitness specialist Rachel Leszyczynski has moved.
"They really loved her and she inspired them to work out, so this is a fun tribute to her," Reyna said.
While many of the residents of the senior living community are already involved in the fitness program, Exercise Across America is a great way to encourage them to keep moving.
