CTA workers say portable toilets for workers unacceptable

CHICAGO (AP) - The union representing Chicago Transit Authority bus drivers and mechanics are demanding that the agency replace the portable toilets they currently use with permanent toilets.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 241 president Tommy Sams says workers don't want to use the portable toilets because "some aren't very fresh" or they're located in dangerous neighborhoods.

Sams added some bus drivers are wearing adult diapers while on their routes because they may not be close to a CTA facility or local businesses that have bathrooms.

Sams said Wednesday the portable toilets are of the cheapest quality, without running water or heat, and often the hand sanitizer is empty or broken.

In a statement, the CTA said it is upgrading the portable toilets, adding that building permanent restrooms is a logistic and financial challenge.
