Famed photographer exhibits in Villa Park

"A Blink of the Eye," a photography exhibit coming to the Park Art Center in Villa Park, features the work of Marc Hauser and famed subjects such as Sophia Loren, Woody Allen and Michael Jordan.

The exhibit will be up from Friday, Feb. 10, to Saturday, April 1, with the opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Park Art Center, 9 E. Park Blvd., Villa Park. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Gallery admission and admission to the reception are free.

Hauser's photographic expertise started as a 13-year-old freshman at New Trier High School, when the Wilmette native launched his boyhood hobby into adulthood with an apprenticeship under Stan Malinowski, a Playboy-contributing photographer.

One of the magazine's art directors asked, "Would your assistant like to go to California next week and shoot Carly Simon?" From there, notable assignments began to sprout, including John Mellencamp in a muddy field for the cover of his "Scarecrow" album and Led Zeppelin in a construction site in London.

Hauser's style aims to capture subjects in their natural state, making sure his subjects feel comfortable so he can focus on getting the right shots, creating unique and striking images captured using simple parameters: shooting in black and white, with one light or natural light, around a table in his studio.

His approach to portraiture has earned Hauser more than 100 awards, including Clios for advertising and a Grammy, and has landed him jobs with Rolling Stone, PepsiCo, Arista Records and Microsoft.

He has earned acclaim for his images of well-known figures such as Aaron Copland, Julia Roberts, Mariel Hemingway, Michael Jordan, Timothy Leary, Sophia Loren, Woody Allen and John Waters.

"It is such an honor to have the iconic work of a world-renowned photographer on display at Park Art Center. His work extends far down below the surface of the portrait producing astonishing results," exhibit coordinator Wendee Goles said.

"Marc has the uncommon ability to connect with his subjects, which in turn connects with the viewer."
