St. Edward, Harvest Christian, Elgin Academy win regional openers

Maddie Spagnola scored 21 points and had 4 assists Tuesday night as the St. Edward girls basketball team opened the postseason with an 85-29 win over Chicago Academy at the Class 2A Guerin regional.

The top-seeded Green Wave (23-5) will take on host Guerin Thursday at 7 p.m. for the regional title. No. 5 seed Guerin defeated No. 4 Chicago Uplift 45-28 Tuesday. St. Edward defeated Guerin by 40 and 27 points in their two Metro Suburban Red games this season.

Katie Castoro and Madison Knott (4 steals) added 15 points each to Tuesday's win while Yssa Sto. Domingo had 9 points, 4 steals and 6 assists.

Harvest Christian 75, Westminster Christian 28: Katie Kaldenberger had 18 points, all on 3-pointers, while Alyssa Iverson and Maddy Martin added 15 points each to lead the Lions to a win in the semifinals of the Class 1A Harvest Christian regional. The Lions (25-3) will play Elgin Academy Thursday for the regional title. Elise Van Noord led Westminster (7-21) with 10 points.

Elgin Academy 42, Ida Crown 38: The Hilltoppers advanced to Thursday's Class 1A Harvest Christian regional title game against the host school behind 13 points from Gia Joyce, 10 from Madeline Sporina and 8 from Renee Scimeca.

Geneva 86, Elgin 27: Margaret Whitley scored 21 points and Grace Loberg added 16 to lead the Vikings (21-4, 11-1) to an Upstate Eight River win. Kylie Graves had 8 points for Elgin (5-22, 0-12).

Hampshire 43, Sycamore 42: Meagan Heine had 18 points and Rachel Dumoulin added 9 to lead the Whip-Purs (16-10) to this nonconference win.

South Elgin 56, DeKalb 38: In nonconference action, Mackie Kelleher led the Storm (19-7) with 17 points while Teagan Pompa added 16 to the South Elgin win.

West Aurora 69, Streamwood 44: Dajour Miles had 12 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals to lead the Blackhawks to this Upstate Eight crossover win. Selene Martinez added 12 points and 5 steals, Kayla Battle had 10 points and 7 rebounds, Skylar Doby 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals and Alura Robinson 4 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals for West Aurora (12-12). Jenejha Williams led Streamwood (13-12) with 18 points and Mandy Mien added 9.

Huntley 53, CL Central 18: Morgan Clausen scored 18 points and Grace Gajewski added 10 for Huntley (15-12, 10-5) in its Fox Valley Conference win.

CL South 52, Grant 43: In nonconference action, Taylor Jozefowicz scored 20 points and Annika Sevcick added 19 to lead Crystal Lake South (13-13) to the win.
