Palatine's Porrata puts up 21 again

Elena Porrata's magic number lately has been 21.

For the third time in four games, the Palatine sophomore guard tossed home 21 points as she helped lead the Pirates to a 53-45 triumph over host Buffalo Grove in Tuesday's Mid-Suburban League girls basketball crossover.

Porrata, who also connected for 21 against Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg, made five 3-pointers and 4 of 5 free throws on Tuesday.

Syd Rzepka added 11 for the winners (13-12) and Tiana Henderson had 7.

BG (13-15) was paced by Kendra Lee (points), Georgette Topalis (12) and Megan Gamber (11).

Prospect 50, Conant 48: Emily Junior Emily Frasco (13 points, 3 rebounds) and sophomore Mandy Withey (12 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) led host Prospect to the crossover win.

Haley Will and Kendra Gancarz each chipped in 6 points for the Knights (12-13) while Eileen Donohue had 5.

"It was another tough-fought battle between these two schools," said Prospect coach Gabrielle Lovin. "Our defense pulled us through the end of the game. It was a great game by all."

Conant (10-15) was led by Jorie Wachal's game-high 29 points, including 3-of-3 from 3-point land. The senior guard also had 5 rebounds. Teammate Ania Baker added 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Wheeling 61, Barrington 47: Nansy Velev (18 points), Washington University-bound Melissa Claver (17) and Nosa Igiehon (14) led Wheeling (12-15) in the MSL crossover over visiting Barrington (4-21).

Freshman Chloe Drozdz added 7 points for the Wildcats (12-15).

"Wheeling has a lot of weapons and they do a nice job moving the ball up the floor to take advantage of them," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "Defensively, I don't believe we played real well. We just gave them too many open looks. I think they shot over 50 percent tonight. We have to clamp down better than that."

Fillies freshman Taylor Thompson enjoyed her best offensive game of her young career, scoring 29 points with 13 field goals, 5 in the first quarter.

"Taylor played what I thought was her best game of the year," Barreiro said. "I felt like she grew up a bit tonight as she made better decisions on when to foul and when not to. Offensively, she is so capable and I think she showed that tonight."

Teammate Cecilia Stack added 15 points, 13 in the second half.

"Stack had some great rebounds but I was thrilled with her offensive game as well," Barreiro said. "She looked to score, and she did a nice job creating space for herself. As a team we did a better job of finding our post players and working the ball in."

Elk Grove 58, Hoffman Estates 42: Senior guard Jenny Banak poured home a career-high 23 points with seven 3-pointers for host Elk Grove (4-23) in the MSL crossover.

Rachel Kandefer also reached double figures for EG with 10 points while Megan Murray chipped in 7.
