Prospect wins as Claver hits 1,000 for Wheeling

Junior Emily Frasco scored 18 points and sophomore Mandy Withey added 16 with 15 rebounds as Prospect's girls basketball team topped host Wheeling 53-46 on Friday night.

The game included the 1,000th point for Wheeling forward Melissa Claver, who will continue her career at Washington University in St. Louis.

Claver tossed in 18 points giving her 1,006 for her career.

"I never expected to reach a 1,000 points in my high school career, or to play in college," Claver said. "But after my sophomore year I realized it was an attainable goal by the end of my career."

Claver plans to study mathematics at Washington.

"What attracted me to the school was its location, its academic standards and how welcoming and determined the girls as well as the coaches were,' she said. "It was just the right fit for me.

"I'd like to thank my family who has helped me through everything as well as all of the coaches and teammates who have been there along the way. I wouldn't be the player I am today without them in my life."

Nansy Velev and Kourtney Schuetz both chipped in 9 points for the Wildcats (11-15, 3-7).

Also reaching double figures for Prospect (11-13, 5-5) was junior Sara Biesterfeldt (11 points) while Margherite Pettenuzzo had 7 rebounds.

The win gives the Knights third place in the MSL East.

"It was a good win for us," said Prospect coach Gabrielle Lovin. "Third place in a competitive conference is something to be proud of."

Seniors Anna Lavalle (3 steals) and Natalie Connors (2 points) each made starts for Senior Night.

"The girls really played well on their Senior Night," said Fremd coach Yates. "I thought they shared the ball and really played team ball. Our senior group has patiently waited for their turn this year and I have been very proud of the growth they have experienced so far this season."

The Vikings graduated four starters from last year's Class 4A state runner-up team.

"And this group still finished 10-0 in the West," Yates said. "It was great to see Anna and Nat start and make significant contributions."
