HE Parks board presents Best of the Best Award to Eagle Scouts

The Hoffman Estates Park District (HE Parks) has announced that two Eagle Scouts have won the annual Best of the Best Award for their efforts in 2016 to build a portable archery range at its Jan. 24 park board meeting.

Niko Soriano and Brett Bertok researched the project, developed a relationship with a Forest Preserve mentor to help with the design of the range and conducted various fundraising events to make this project a reality. They were able to raise enough funds to cover the cost of the project and a made a $600 donation to the Friends of HE Parks. The park district will start programming at the new archery range in the Spring of 2017.

"We thank Niko and Brett for their hard work, dedication and support for the new archery range that they have brought to the community and also for their generous donation to the Friends of HE Parks," said Park Board Chairman Mike Bickham.

Also at the Jan. 24 meeting, the park board named the Redhawks Junior Varsity football team and the Redhawks Junior Varsity Cheer Squad as the January Best of Hoffman.

The 2016 Junior Varsity Redhawks won the national championship for the second year. The team ended the 2016 season by winning the Chicagoland Pop Warner state championship, Mid America regional championship and the second national championship in a row making Pop Warner history. They are the first team to have won three titles in a row. The team competed the week on December 2 in Orlando, Florida and beat teams from Colorado, New Jersey and Florida to win the championship.

The Junior Varsity Cheer Squad entered the season defending third place in the nation. They finished the season as a national champion runner-up placing second at the national championship by just a few points. The team placed second in the Chicagoland Championship and Mid America Championship, then placed second in Orlando, Florida in a bracket of 16 other teams from around the country. This is the highest a Hoffman Estates team has ever placed for cheerleading.

The HE Parks' Best of Hoffman award is presented monthly to volunteers or park district residents who exemplify excellence and help the park district fulfill its mission to provide "first class parks, facilities, programs and services in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner."
