Harper College women's basketball team sidelined

For the second time since the 2011-2012 school year, the season for the Harper College women's basketball team has come to an end prematurely.

"We didn't have enough players available, between injuries and classes," explained Harper athletic director Doug Spiwak, who made the decision to end the season Tuesday afternoon.

The end of the season also marks the end of a Hawks career for Tamara Zivak. The Barrington alum is the only sophomore on this year's squad.

The Hawks were ranked ninth nationally in opponent's 3-point percentage and finished the season 4-24 overall and 0-11 in North Central Community College Conference play.

Spiwak, who met with coach Jenny Turpel at the beginning of the week, acknowledged that getting more players into the program is essential.

"We have to do a better job recruiting" Spiwak said. "It takes time to build a program."

The lack of players on North Central Community College conference women's basketball teams is not solely a problem at Harper.

"Unfortunately, I'm seeing that around the league," Spiwak said.

Parola honored: The Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association named Mundelein's Todd Parola the Class 4A area baseball coach of the year at last Friday's IHSBCA luncheon.

Mundelein advanced to the state championship game for the first time in its history last spring. The Mustangs, who finished the season with a 31-10 record, lost to Providence Catholic 10-3.
