Families learn together at Kilmer STEAM Night

Kilmer Elementary School hosted its first STEAM Night on Thursday, January 26, aimed to engage students and families in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

Students showcased their scientific inquiry and lead activities supported by their teachers. These activities allowed students, parents, and community members to broaden their understanding on how things work and are designed, and explore the world around us.

"Parents really loved the fact that their children were using their observational skills and were able to develop their own hypotheses," said Estella Yancy, Kilmer second grade bilingual teacher.

"It was overwhelming to see more than 600 people engaged in an authentic family learning experience that ranged from building 3-D sculptures and making ice cream, to computer coding and even exploring the stars," said Kilmer Principal Diana O'Donnell. "Our parent community resoundingly demonstrated the importance of supporting their students as well as having a true STEAM experience."

Area organizations also supported the event. Buffalo Grove Park District, Wheeling Park District, the Boy Scouts, Indian Trails Public Library, Harper College, and the CCSD21 Family Learning Program showcased some of their programs that connect to STEAM education.

"This evening was a success because of the partnerships we have throughout the community, the dedication of our teachers and staff, and our supportive PTO," O'Donnell said.
