Dundee-Crown notches 4th straight win

Struggling for wins in November, December and early January, the Dundee-Crown girls basketball team has finally started to rack up some victories.

Registering their fourth victory in a row, the Chargers were able to outlast Prairie Ridge 38-32 in Fox Valley Conference action in Crystal Lake Wednesday night.

"It was an ugly win but it is nice to keep the winning streak going," said D-C coach Sarah Miller. "It is also nice to keep getting wins with the regional seedings coming up next week. We looked like there were times we could put PR away but to their credit they kept battling. We had too many careless and unforced turnovers. Bottom line, we have to play better to beat McHenry Friday night."

The Chargers (13-11, 7-5) were paced by Payton Schmidt and Anna Kieltyka, who scored 9 points apiece. Both Schmidt and Kieltyka connected on two 3-pointers each.

"I got a little extra shooting in with coach Miller during ninth hour today and it really helped," said Kieltyka. "I was in a good shooting flow and my shot felt good when it left my hands. It is good to keep the winning streak going but we know we have to play better."

Miller was happy to see Kieltyka step up with a solid performance.

"Anna has really been shooting the ball well lately," said Miller. "She made some really timely 3s tonight which really helped us."

The Chargers, who held a slim 15-14 lead at halftime, were able to extend the advantage to 29-19 on a 3-pointer from Schmidt with 1:22 left in the third quarter.

The Wolves (8-15, 3-10), who were hampered by 27 turnovers, were able to slice the Charger lead to 5, 32-27, after a 3-pointer from Nicole Dorn with 1:46 left in the contest.

PR couldn't climb any closer.

In the last minute, Lucy Atherton connected on a putback, Paige Gieseke made 2 free throws and Schmidt and Allison Michalski converted on a free throw each as the Chargers, who overcame 22 turnovers, were able to post a 6-point win.

PR, which connected on 10-of-40 from the field for 25 percent and was 4-of-15 from beyond the arc for 27 percent, was led by Dorn with 11 points including a trey. Perhats added 9 points for the Wolves connecting on 3-of-10 from 3-point range.
