Corpus Christi Church hosts Special Needs Mass on anniversary weekend of Roe V. Wade

Children of Mary, a special needs social group under the Joliet Diocese, in collaboration with Corpus Christi Church in Carol Stream had a mass on Sunday, January 21 with the intention of recognizing the gifts of individuals with special needs. The idea time to recognize these individuals was on the 45th anniversary weekend of Roe v. Wade. Sadly, our culture has chosen to abort babies in the womb who have physical/mental impairments. Individuals with special needs who attended the mass were able to use their gifts/talents in actively participating in the mass by proclaiming the word of God, greeting the congregation before the service, singing praises, etc. There were people attending from throughout the Joliet Diocese which encompasses DuPage, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, Kendall and Will counties. Fr Tony Tachetta, a retired priest, gave a beautiful tribute to these individuals and also made them feel wanted, loved, and very special in our eyes. He stated, "all of us have special needs", not just those that have physical/mental challenges.

This is just one of the ways in which the Catholic Church outreaches to the more vulnerable in our society. Children of Mary was formed over seven years ago and meets weekly to help participants not only grow in their faith, but to provide a means of giving back to the community through community service projects. They provide a great support system for these "special" individuals to cope with life transitions such as opting out of the school system and aging parents/caregivers.
