Former Gurnee superintendent to retire

Former Gurnee Elementary District 56 superintendent Ben Martindale is taking another stab at retirement. Martindale has previously tried to retire, but took two jobs that involved turning around troubled school systems. After nearly five years, Martindale will depart as North Chicago Unit District 187's chief education officer June 30. District 187 has selected John Price to be superintendent. Price works at Evanston/Skokie School District 65. Martindale was District 56's superintendent from 1999 to 2007. He served as Round Lake Area Unit District 116's chief executive officer from 2007 to 2010 while the system was operated by the state due to financial problems. Martindale left District 116 after it was deemed able to function under local control. The Wadsworth resident is leaving North Chicago under a similar circumstance.
