GreenFields of Geneva residents go face-to-face with penguins in Antarctica

Residents of GreenFields of Geneva visited face-to-face last week with Adélie penguins in Antarctica. Due to the wonders of modern technology, the virtual field trip was made possible by Microsoft Education. Without leaving the comfort of their warm home, the seniors interacted via Skype, with renowned educator and researcher Jean Pennycook from among the penguin breeding colony at Cape Royds, Antarctica.

"We are always looking for new adventures for our residents. Many of them have traveled extensively throughout their lives. This 'trip' to Antarctica was exceptional, even for the most seasoned traveler," said Rebecca Sytsma, activities coordinator at GreenFields. "Additionally, Jean talked about the impact of climate change on penguins. A lot of our residents are extremely interested in the environment so this was really fascinating for them."

The residents also toured the McMurdo Research Station in Antarctica.

To help create hype for the exciting program, Sytsma planned other penguin-related events including a screening of the film "March of the Penguins."

GreenFields offers independent living, assisted living, memory support, rehabilitation and skilled nursing with the most comprehensive plan available for long-term care if ever needed. For information, visit www.GreenFieldsofGeneva.org.
