Storage that makes a statement

After moving this summer, design blogger Jennifer Sergent quickly realized that her new home lacked one crucial element: built-in shelving.

"We had nothing to hold our books, records, accessories, video games - you name it," the DC by Design writer said in an email.

So she started the search for a "good, attractive" alternative and landed on etageres, a modern and space-saving solution with open shelves.

"They are art and accessories in themselves; they make their own statement along with whatever you choose to put on them," Sergent says, adding, "You can find them in all price ranges - and you can take them with you when you move."

Here are some of her top picks.
