Glenbard East's Srey making the most of her senior season

Veronica Srey isn't counting down the days until the gymnastics season ends.

The Glenbard East senior knows the end is eventually going to arrive, and that's serving as extra motivation to finish at her best.

Srey had one of her finest efforts this season during Wednesday's triangular against visiting Fenton and Glenbard South, winning a pair of events as well as the all-around as the Rams cruised to victory.

The Rams posted a 136.1, well ahead of Fenton's 115.85 and Glenbard South's 98.85.

“This season has gone by so fast,” Srey said. “I can't believe it's almost over. I felt like it would last forever. We still can improve, though, and that's my hope. We're consistent, but we're still trying to have that great meet by eliminating those little mistakes.”

Her routine on bars was a thing of beauty with a 9.35. She also won vault.

“That's only the second time I've done my pike half, which is something I've been working on for a long time,” she said. “Kelsey (Donovan) and Sydney (Nasternak) had added some things so I wanted to do so as well. We're practicing hard and this was as good as we've done in a while.”

The Rams had the top three finishers in all four events as Krasimira Ganeva and Sierra Olson contributed along with Srey, Donovan and Nasternak.

“Once again we were right around our average,” Rams coach Jessica Bugajsky said. “We're staying consistent and that's been one of our goals all season long.”

Fenton was without one of its all-arounders as junior Katrina Krebasch was sidelined with a concussion.

“It seems like we always have someone out hurt,” Bison coach Paula Parat said. “She'll be back, though, and the nice thing this year is we have four girls who are gymnasts and that's really helped us develop.”

One of those gymnasts is Krebasch's younger sister, freshman Julianna Krebasch, who led the team with a 30.5 in the all-around.

“It was an OK meet,” Krebasch said. “I made some mistakes, but I'll try to fix them. I'm trying to get better on stuff on floor and to work on some other goals. It hurts though with my sister being out.”

Glenbard South skipped practice Tuesday to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children to do some team bonding while helping a good cause.

The lack of that practice might have knocked their score down, but the Raiders were still pleased with their effort.

“We went 93 last week so we had a gain of 5-6 points there,” Raiders coach Lee Wood said. “If we can go up another 10 points by the end of the year that would be really nice. We'll keep pushing so we'll see what happens.”

Sophomore Katie Kibbey paced the Raiders with a 30.05 in the all-around. She had the team's highest score in all four events.

“It's been a fun year and we're a really close team,” she said. “I had a pretty good night. I've rearranged my floor routine and am now doing all front tumbling due to some back issues. Now we're just trying to clean things up. We're feeling pretty good with where we're at.”
