South Elgin police: Scammers targeting elderly at their doors

South Elgin police are warning residents about scammers targeting the elderly after two women posing as health workers gained their way into a home, leaving a bedroom ransacked.

Two women posing as Kane County and Medicare health care workers knocked Saturday on the door of a home in the 1400 block of Raymond Street and talked their way inside by telling a woman they were there to conduct a physical exam, police said.

One of the women occupied the victim while the other woman said she was going to the bathroom. After the women left, the victim discovered someone went through her possessions, leaving boxes and drawers open, police said.

The victim didn't think anything was taken, Chief Jerry Krawczyk said.

Another woman on the 600 block of Elizabeth Street told police two women knocked on her door that same day and said they were with Medicare, police said. The woman did not let them in because she asked for ID and they didn't have any.

The women got into a four-door, older silver pickup truck with an older man in the driver's seat, and drove off.

The women are described as white, possibly Hispanic, wearing gray pants and gray shirts. One was thought to be 25 to 30 years old and had a satchel purse; the other was 50 to 55 years old. The driver of the pickup was described as white, possibly Hispanic.

People should ask for ID when someone claiming to be in an official capacity knocks on their door, Krawczyk said. The last such case in South Elgin took place sometime in the summer, he said.

South Elgin police are asking anyone with information to contacts the investigations unit at (847) 741-2151.
