Music notes: Lumineers, Kevin Griffin kick off big weekend

Folk rock luminaries

The Lumineers busted on to the scene (as much as this richly textured and low-key Americana band can bust anywhere) in 2012 with their infinitely catchy hit “Hey Ho,” and they just haven't stopped, rolling out critical and commercial hits such as “Stubborn Love” and “Submarine.” The Colorado folk rockers bring their “Cleopatra World Tour Continues” to Rosemont this weekend.

7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Allstate Arena, 6920 N. Mannheim Road, Rosemont. $29-$60; single-seat tickets are still available. (847) 635-6601 or rosemont.com/allstate/events/the-lumineers/.

Aha, it was 'Good'

Kevin Griffin, the distinctive voice behind Better Than Ezra's hits “Desperately Wanting,” “In the Blood,” “King of New Orleans,” “Breathless” and more over the last two decades, is bringing two solo performances to Chicago's City Winery. A pair of great local acoustic openers are joining him on stage - Ryan Powers on Friday, and Rolling Meadows' David Paige on Saturday (sold out, but there's a waitlist available).

8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21, at City Winery, 1200 W. Randolph St., Chicago. $28-$40. (312) 733-9463 or citywinery.com.

Full moonwalk

Celebrate the life, music and showmanship of the late Michael Jackson when the “MJ Live” tribute tour rolls into the Rosemont Theatre Saturday with all the spectacle one would expect.

7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Rosemont Theatre, 5400 N. River Road, Rosemont. $22-$154. (847) 671-5100 or rosemont.com/theatre/events/mj-live/.

Not 'Out of Love'

Australian soft-rock duo Air Supply brings their infectious, love-laden tracks to Waukegan's Genesee Theatre Saturday. The Romantics, nearly 30-year veterans of the American rock scene, join them with time-honored hits “What I Like About You,” “I Can't Tell You Anything” and more. A Lost In Love VIP Experience package is available, featuring premium seating and a VIP swag bag.

8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan. $39-$85; $162 for VIP. (847) 263-6300 or geneseetheatre.com.

Kick off the week with a Monday night Kings of Leon show at Chicago's United Center.

Kings of the airwaves

Even though 2004's “Taper Jean Girl” gained some buzz outside the U.S., Kings of Leon really set American radios ablaze with their 2008 release “Sex on Fire.” Following it up with “Use Somebody,” a nod to the '90s strummy alternative sound, cemented them as a band to add to playlists. The Grammy-winning group makes a stop at Chicago's United Center with Atlanta-based rock band Deerhunter.

7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at the United Center, 1901 W. Madison St., Chicago. $29.50-$65.60. (312) 455-4500 or unitedcenter.com.
