Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) is among top 5% of hospitals in clinical outcomes in nation, according to Healthgrades®

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (January 17, 2017) - Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) today announced that it has received Healthgrades® 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™. The distinction recognizes NCH as one of the top five percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for its clinical performance, as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

"Our goal at NCH is to pursue a higher level of excellence every day. In fact, our culture of excellence demands it - it's that simple," says Stephen Scogna, president and chief executive officer. "Receiving the Distinguished Hospital Award from Healthgrades doesn't happen because the CEO or the quality people want it. This award reflects the all-in commitment of every single NCH employee - both clinical and non-clinical. I gratefully acknowledge our employees' efforts on behalf of the patients and communities we serve."

From 2013 through 2015, patients treated in hospitals receiving Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence had, on average, a 26.2 percent lower risk of dying (across 19 procedures and conditions where mortality is the clinical outcome), than if they were treated in hospitals that did not achieve this distinction. During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the level of Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence across these 19 procedures and conditions, 160,322 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 25 percent lower risk of dying from a stroke than if treated at a hospital that did not achieve this distinction.

"Given the variation in quality care across the nation, it's never been more important for consumers to do their homework when searching for a hospital," said Brad Bowman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. "Those hospitals that have received Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence award have proven their long-standing commitment to providing quality care to drive better health outcomes for their patients."

In October, NCH was named by Healthgrades as one of America's 100 Best Hospitals™ for Stroke Care. NCH also is the only hospital in Illinois to receive the 2017 Healthgrades® Neurosciences, Stroke Care and Cranial Neurosurgery Excellence Award. See all of NCH's recent Healthgrades awards.

The 258 recipients of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2017 study period (2013-2015), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures -as measured by objective clinical outcomes performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
