Register now for Cary Park District classes

The Cary Park District offers a variety of programs this winter , including theater classes, basketball and babysitting training. The Cary Community Center is at 255 Briargate Road. For details on registration, call (847) 639-6100 or visit www.carypark.com.

Dramatic Expression:

This program introduces acting and beginning script reading through short plays and group games. Children will develop verbal and physical acting skills, group cooperation, and self-confidence in this fast-paced, fun environment. The program for children ages 5 to 7 meets from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 23 to Feb. 13, at the Community Center. Registration is $32 for residents and nonresidents.

Children's Theater Company of Cary:

Develop confidence, creativity, and stage presence while participating in a Cary Park District directed performance! Students will audition for a role in the play, are cast by the director, and will rehearse until show time. All students are guaranteed a speaking role. Students will also play games while working on impromptu, projection and listening skills. Students must be available for all rehearsals and the performance day. This program for children in second through fifth grades meets on from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 6 through May 15, at the Kraus Senior Center. Registration is $100 for residents and $150 for nonresidents.

Youth Theater Company of Cary:

Love acting in a play but you're ready to learn more about the "behind the scenes"? The Cary Youth Theater Company is specifically designed to challenge an older age group interested in performing while learning all aspects leading up to and including a show. In addition to acting in their own play, this group will help direct the Children's Theater Company performance while learning about lighting, sound, scene mapping, and set design. Students must be available for all rehearsals and the performance. This company is for teens in sixth through ninth grades, and meets fro 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 14 through May 16, at the Kraus Senior Center. Registration is $100 for residents and $150 for nonresidents.

Safe Sitter Babysitting Training:

This course will provide the information an d skills necessary for safe and responsible child care in the absence of parents and guardians. Learn how to care for children, basic first aid, personal safety, injury and problem prevention, behavior management, and baby-sitting as a business. This program will include a baby-sitting manual and completion card. Bring a baby-sized doll and lunch to class. This course for teens ages 11 to 15 meets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. Registration is $65 for residents and $98 for nonresidents.

Basketball 101:

This beginning basketball class is designed to develop early basketball skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing, and learning the basic rules of the game. Each class includes instruction as well as structured games. This class is perfect for the beginner looking to understand the game, learn new skills, and "have a ball". This class for age 7 to 9 meets from 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 30 to March 6, at Briargate School. Registration is $55 for residents and $65 for nonresidents.

Basketball 202:

This class continues to strengthen participant's basic skills of the game of basketball in addition to teaching offensive and defensive aspects of the game including setting screens, proper defense staff, and understanding concepts of zone and man-to-man defense. This class for ages 10 to 13 meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 30 to March 6, at Briargate School. Registration is $55 for residents and $65 for nonresidents

Preschool Smarties & Lunch:

Your child will become a smartie while preparing for preschool. This program will begin with children enjoying a sack lunch and drink brought from home with his or her friends. This is a great way for children to socialize and learn manners. After lunch we will continue with learning letters and numbers, circle time, and building friendships. This class for age 3 to 5 meets from 11:05 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 8 to March 1, at the Community Center. Registration is $39 for residents and $59 for nonresidents.
