Topalis, Bison take two at Lake Forest
After shooting 33 percent and 19 percent against Antioch and Lake Forest, respectively on Saturday at the Lake Forest MLK tournament, Buffalo Grove coach Steve Kolodziej submitted a request.
"We challenged our seniors to step up and respond," he said. "And that's exactly what they did."
The Bison (10-12) went out and won two games - 56-33 over Lake Forest and 54-22 over Deerfield - with seniors Georgette Topalis and Megan Gamber each playing big roles.
Topalis netted a career-high 27 points with five 3-pointers, 7 rebounds and 6 steals against Lake Forest and came back with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals against Deerfield.
Gamber struck for 9 points in the first game, then came back and went 5-for-5 from the 3-point range in the first 12 minutes against Deerfield to finish with 15 points.
"It was a great day for our seniors and their leadership to show up," Kolodziej said.
DeKalb Tournament: Senior Grace Tworek was named to the all-tourney team as Fremd (18-5) took third place with a 66-57 triumph over Rockford Lutheran.
The Vikings dropped a 42-41 decision to Rockford Boylan in the semifinals.
Class 4A No. 2 Rock Island topped No. 6 Rockford Boylan 70-60 for the title.
Tworek led the Vikings against Rockford Boylan with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocked shots followed by Emily Klaczek (11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists) and Colleen Kennedy (6).
Tworek came back with a career-high 32 points in the third-place game. She had three 3-pointers and made 11 of 13 free throws.
Kennedy had 13 points (three 3-pointers) while Midori Williams also reached double figures with 12 points.
Jacobs 48, Elk Grove 37: Freshman Megan Murray led the host Grenadiers (3-17) with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Senior Jenny Banak and junior Zoe Blomquist each scored 7 points and had a 3-pointer in the nonconference game.
