Arlington Heights Library not favoring a new northern branch

The Arlington Heights Memorial Library staff on Tuesday will recommend against opening a library branch in the northern part of the village.

Trustees will discuss the recommendation during a committee-of-the-whole meeting at 6:30 p.m. and vote on it during the regular meeting at 7:30 p.m., according to the meeting agendas.

For the past few years, officials have been exploring the possibility of renting a minimum of 5,700 square feet of space somewhere north of Palatine Road due to the area's population growth. But library administrators have since deemed the costs to run the facility to be too high.

"Though staff believes a library facility north of Palatine Road would be well used and would enhance the overall library service to the village as a whole, it is our assessment that the ongoing costs would limit the possibility of future service enhancements to a degree that we do not recommend proceeding with opening a branch at this time," officials wrote in the meeting agenda item.

While there had been discussion about a northern branch for years, it wasn't until last year that the library hired a consultant to do a feasibility study about the costs of a new branch.

The meetings will be held in the second floor boardroom of the library, 500 N. Dunton Ave.
