New commercial development planned for former bank site in Algonquin

All that sits there now is a big pile of rubble and remnants of the building that once graced the Randall Road corridor in Algonquin.

And even though many of you have driven by it hundreds and even thousands of times over the years, now that the building is down, some of you are wondering what that rubble used to be, and what will be going there in its place.

It's amazing how fast we forget, but the remnants that sit along Randall Road in front of the Home Depot in Algonquin near Stonegate Drive were once a part of Great Bank in Algonquin and most recently Charter One Bank, according to Ben Mason, senior planner for the village of Algonquin.

The old bank building, which was on the west side of the road fronting Randall, has been coming down in pieces slowly this month to make way for a new commercial development, Mason said. Crews have been tearing it down piece by piece, and large chunks still remain on site.

The remnants will be cleared away to make way for a new development.

"The current developer is preparing plans to build a new commercial center of approximately 15,000 square feet, which could be on an upcoming Planning and Zoning agenda later this winter," Mason said.

He said the bank property sold to a developer last year. The developer has plans underway, but no final plans for the property have been submitted yet.

"The final plan is still being firmed up, but new construction could start up later this year," Mason said.

The building has been sitting vacant on the site for many years, Mason said.

He said he believes Great Bank of Algonquin opened in the mid-1990s, and closed many years ago. After that, he said, Charter One Bank took over the building and started operating out of the Algonquin site.

Since Charter One Bank closed that location, the building has been sitting vacant. The new developer decided to tear the building down, and build something new in its place, Mason said.

Stores closing:

The Tuesday Morning stores along Randall Road in Batavia and South Elgin are closing permanently this month.

The last day for the store in Batavia at 41 N. Randall Road was Friday, Jan. 13.

The South Elgin Store, at 608 Randall Road, could be open for a few more days this week. However, employees said as soon as their product is gone, they will be shutting their doors so you may want to call ahead. The store's number is (847) 807-3318. As of Friday evening, the inventory was low.

Employees are advising fans of Tuesday Morning that they can still shop at other locations, including in Fox River Grove, Naperville and Kildeer.
