Opening set for $2 million Oakton student center

Oakton Community College will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Jan. 17, for the school's new $2 million student center.

Students will use the 7,300-square-foot space for clubs, activities, recreation and group study on the Des Plaines campus. The center features a lounge area with a fire place and TVs with floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the lake to the north.

In June, Riley Construction started work on the center designed by Legat Architects.

The ceremony is 5 p.m. Tuesday in room 1530 of the campus at 1600 E. Golf Road. Speakers include Board of Trustees Chairwoman Ann Tennes, Oakton President Joianne Smith and Vice President for Student Affairs Karl Brooks.

Attendees will be able to tour the student center.
