Wolves stay hot in win over Moose

WINNIPEG, Man. - Bryce Gervais netted a game-winning breakaway goal at 16:41 of the third period to break a tie and push the Chicago Wolves past the Manitoba Moose, 4-2, Friday night at MTS Centre.

Wing Andrew Agozzino collected three assists while defenseman Morgan Ellis tallied two points (G, A) to help the Wolves (23-12-3-2) overcome the Moose (14-17-3-2) for the club's 10th victory in 11 games.

Chicago Wolves goaltender Pheonix Copley (11-4-2) made 35 saves for his sixth consecutive win.

Near the midway point of a relatively whistle-less first period, the Moose opened scoring when Ryan Olsen redirected a Peter Stoykewych point shot from near the left side of the Wolves net.

The Wolves took control of the second period early - just 25 seconds in - and knotted the game 1-1. Wade Megan won a battle along the boards near the left offensive corner. He corralled the puck and carried it to the center of the same-side circle and lasered a shot past Eric Comrie (7-10-3).

At 5:02, Manitoba regained the lead when Kyle Connor, alone in the slot, chipped a shot past Copley.

However, Ellis tallied his second goal in as many games when fellow blueliner Reid McNeill fed him the puck. Ellis skated to the center of the offensive blue line and wired a shot through traffic for the game-tying goal at 16:42 of the second.

The teams battled throughout the third period and the Wolves seized an opportunity with under five minutes to play. Ellis sprung Gervais near the centerline for a breakaway chance. Moose goaltender Comrie was with the shot the entire way, but the puck flipped over his leg pad and into the back of the net for the 3-2 go-ahead goal.

Kenny Agostino added an empty-net goal with less than a second on the clock to seal the victory.

Comrie stopped 32 shots in the loss.
